A time scale where the second is defined by the transitions of the cesium atom. Atomic time scales differ from the earlier astronomical time scales, which define the second based on the rotation of the Earth on its axis, which is slightly irregular. Time is calculated at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sevres, France by averaging times sent from numerous national laboratories.
